*What's a rainmaker?
The Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines a rainmaker as:
1) a person who is highly successful, especially in business;
2) a person who seeks to cause rain to fall, either by magic or by a technique
such as seeding.
According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, a rainmaker is:
1) a person who produces or attempts to produce rain by artificial means;
2) a person (as a partner in a law firm) who brings in new business; also: a
person whose influence can initiate progress or ensure success.
In farming and folklore, the "person who causes rain to fall" is a lifesaver.
Farmers call in the rainmaker to end droughts and save the crops. Rainmakers
can be pilots who seed the crops from their planes, or magicians with special
powers.
In the Internet economy, the "person who causes rain to fall" is also a
lifesaver. It's someone who brings in business, who makes business grow. It
means seeding ideas and piloting solutions through to fruition. And sometimes
that can seem like magic.
