Cope with Cancer features nine interactive pathways of information the patient can choose to explore. Sharon Hampson, well-known children’s entertainer of Sharon, Lois & Bram and herself a breast cancer survivor, explains the pathways and introduces patients to a group of people who share their own stories about cancer and the effect it has had on their lives.

The pathways of information featured on the CD-ROM include:

  • Discovering you have cancer - addresses issues such as ‘what is cancer?’, ‘what causes it?’, ‘why me?’ and ‘how cancer can change you’.
  • Taking charge - features segments on overcoming fears, knowing your disease and yourself, being positive and taking control, good nutrition, working with the health care team and setting goals.
  • Medical treatments - discusses the variety of treatments available for patients, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and also helps with issues such as when treatment is delayed, new treatment options, side effects of treatment, managing pain, clinical trials, and also provides help with questions patients can ask their doctors.
  • Complementary cancer therapies - includes information on spiritual, psychological, physical and relaxation therapies for patients.
  • Enlisting support - addresses difficult questions such as how to tell your family that you have cancer, and how to tell children that you have the disease. In addition, this pathway discusses the importance of a support group and setting up a support team.
  • Community resources - includes lists of books, videos, brochures, booklets and magazines, as well as Internet resources, cancer information and support services and Cancer Treatment Centres.
  • Going the distance - highlights issues such as setting goals, relationships, and how cancer can change you over time.
  • If cancer recurs - addresses the question of why this happened and provides important questions for patients to ask their doctors.
  • Kidz Zone - is a colourful, dynamic and easy to use pathway that helps children with questions such as what cancer is, what it is like, talking about cancer, getting help and how cancer is treated.
